The winding drive is for thrillseekers with some precarious cliffside edges, stretching 50 kilometres along this once-in-a-lifetime Unesco protected coast. Completed in 1854 by Ferdinand II and running from Naples to Amalfi, look out for medieval watchtowers along the headland.

Only accessible from mid-May to October when snow has cleared from the highway, and brisk in the desert climate or when reaching 5,238 metres at the Taglang Mountain Pass, this adventure is not for the faint of heart! Those brave enough will be rewarded with unforgettable glacial mountain ranges, yaks passing through plains, sacred Buddhist sites, and blissful isolation.
