Discover the Riches of Africa

We’re exploring the vastness and the contrasts of the African sub-continent this week, featuring six ways to engage with wonderful places, experiences and cultures we think you’ll adore…

Sterrekopje, Franschhoek, South Africa

So, it’s not a hotel – they’re emphatic about that – but this is certainly a place where you’ll relax and unwind entirely, while reconnecting to nature and food so fresh that it could have been harvested just minutes before you tuck in. Sterrekopje is a remote farm nestling in the foothills of the Franschhoek mountains, where over many years the natural balance of the land has been restored and cherished to make it as fertile and sustainable as possible. The biodiverse abundance means 100 different items of fresh produce are grown on-site, miles away from anywhere. You’ll be staying in an elegantly comfortable farmhouse or one of the cottages enfolded by lush nature, and while you enjoy the sanctuary you’ll be reconnecting with your soul – and looking forward to another leisurely dinner under the stars.

Eagle Island Lodge, Okavango Delta, Botswana

There are few places to match the Okavango Delta wetlands to experience a magical and satisfying safari. It’s at its very best from May to September – so think about your trip next year, maybe – when you can glide silently through the natural water channels in a traditional-style canoe, with hippos wallowing either side of you and sea eagles soaring above. This Belmond lodge, is, as you might expect, on its own private island, and the dozen beautiful tented rooms have high ceilings, huge beds and their own plunge pools. They have privacy and wonderful outlooks in equal measure. By staying here you’ll be helping projects to harmlessly separate local livestock from endangered local predators, and to save Africa’s wild dogs.

Virtuoso travelers receive:

For 2023:

  • Private dining experience for up to two guests once during stay, served on the balcony of your room or at a private location within the lodge (must have minimum value of $100 USD equivalent)

This is their wide-ranging home, an untouched wilderness of silent deserts and rushing rivers where they have learned to adapt to life alongside everything from oryx and tiny chameleons to crocodiles and zebra. Staying here helps to maintain and protect the delicate balance between all of Serra Cafema’s inhabitants. In exchange, you’ll return each day from all kinds of guided safaris – boat, walking, even quad-biking – to sultry luxury in one of eight suites built from wood, canvas and thatch, with elevated decks to watch the orangeness of the sinking sun intensify… having put away a hearty and local supper.

Travel As A Force For Good

We are a proud member of The Conscious Travel Foundation which is a global community, uniting members of the travel industry to reshape the impact of tourism on the world. We believe in the power of education and collaboration to fuel a shift in industry practice, igniting change and safeguarding the planet for future generations.

Whilst it can be seen the devastating effects of the climate change on our world, we are hopeful that going forward travel can still provide a positive impact on communities around the planet.

There are many inspiring stories from properties looking to make the changes necessary in order to preserve what we have. The resilience of communities ad habitats across the world is a sign that we can do better, and we must all learn how we can do things ourselves in order to best protect our future generations.

Below are some of the inspiring stories from some properties from across the world.

The Lodge at Blue Sky

United States

Teardrop Hotels

Sri Lanka

From the very beginning sustainability and community have been at the very heart of the Teardrop story. We love this island home of ours and passionately believe in making a positive impact wherever possible. Our core beliefs sit behind everything we do and we constantly look for new ways to have a positive social and environmental impact.

Restoration and transformation

This is a great passion of ours; Saving and restoring beautiful, often abandoned, old buildings and reimagining and transforming them into inspiring fusions of old and new.

Each of our properties is totally unique and many have been saved from ruin. Heritage buildings and vintage tea bungalows were carefully chosen for their character and have been lovingly restored. Wherever possible, we preserve their original features and let their architecture inspire our contemporary interiors.

Tiger Mountain - Pokhara Lodge

Nepal

Tiger Mountain, since its start has been at the forefront of responsible tourism. This covers all our stakeholders: our guests, employees, local communities, and government. We strive to minimise our impacts be they environmental, social, or corporate and to support our local communities’ own development initiatives. This is through our Community Support Partnership Programme that supports Community Forest User Groups, local schools, health posts, local national and international charities, environmental research and monitoring, advocacy, and media.

As we have evolved through the thought processes of eco-tourism and wider sustainable tourism, we now seek to develop concepts appropriate to the middle hills of Nepal for truly Regenerative Tourism – a leap beyond somewhat passive sustainability to reverse damaging trends to regenerate the environment and communities so that all can thrive – in so doing we provide a deeper level of transformational journey for our guests through a rich sense of place and an immersive experience of life in the middle hills of Nepal. Through authentic experiences, engagement with the local community, integrating with the forest and mountain landscape, understanding the rhythms of life, we create a fuller engagement than just the change from work to holiday. This, in turn, must co-evolve with a more holistic approach to local communities and their aspirations for development. Tiger Mountain aims to be the bridge between the guests’ transformation and the community’s aspirations.

The Sujan Life

India

Our Vision: To preserve and protect parts of the Indian wilderness as well as our diverse cultural heritage for future generations.

A Family dedicated to Conservation

Our family has a legacy of working with wildlife through filming, monitoring, researching and creating awareness about tigers in Ranthambhore for generations. In 1974, when Tejbir and Malvika followed a narrow, winding road it led them to the base of the ancient fort of Ranthambhore. In 1988, they co-established The Ranthambhore Foundation, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), working closely with the development of villages around the park boundaries. As a child, Jaisal learnt the lay of the land by walking through every inch of the park; forbidden under today’s regulations. He was taught animal tracking and bush craft skills as a toddler under the tutelage of his father Tejbir, the late Fateh Singh Rathore and his uncle Valmik Thapar – regarded as India’s leading wildlife experts and conservationists.

The Safari Series

Kenya

One of our post-covid promises includes the promise to provide an experience that is “not once in a lifetime, but for your lifetime”

BUT WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

In so much marketing, you see around the promotion of a safari or safari camp you are likely to read the words ‘a trip of a lifetime!’. This is, honestly, because most safari experiences are very expensive and most people who visit Kenya can only afford to come on a trip that happens once in their lives. But this doesn’t need to be the case – many travelers or families go to the same place time and time again, especially if it was a place they felt a real affinity for.

Sustainability is a real ‘buzzword’, but what does really mean? Can travel, which can be incredibly bad for the environment if done without thought, really help sustain a landscape for the future? At The Safari Series, we think so. In fact, it is built into the core of what we do.

The Datai Langkawi

Malaysia

Nature sits at the very core of The Datai Langkawi’s DNA – it is an integral part of who we are and what makes us unique. The wonderful natural setting and the environmental features – the sea, mangroves and ancient virgin rainforest – provide the very foundations for our offering of nature-related experiences combined with holistic and well-being programmes.

Just as nature has gifted us our environment and its fascinating inhabitants, we have a responsibility to conserve and strengthen nature’s increasingly fragile resources and to reduce the negative impact of our footprint on the environment. This responsibility – which has evolved into The Datai Pledge – has culminated into a robust programme of initiatives with the single-minded objective of creating a sustainable environment for the future. The Datai Pledge programme not only benefits the living creatures who share this spectacular island with us but also enriches the lives of our guests, team members and the local community through meaningful participation.

The Datai Pledge programme comprises a series of initiatives relating to our business operations, the land, sea, and youth. These four elements correspond to the four pillars of our programme: Pure for the Future; Wildlife for the Future; Fish for the Future; and Youth for the Future, respectively.

Blue Apple Beach

Colombia

Bocachica is an under-served village on an undeveloped island. The roads are not paved and there is still no running water. Access to education is limited, unemployment is high, and those lucky enough to find work must often support entire families on the Colombian minimum wage of less than $10 a day.

But like all people, all over, Bocachiqueros are proud, charming, hard working and ambitious for themselves, their families and their community.

As one of the only sources of formal employment in the area, Blue Apple’s goal as a business is to offer guests the best experience possible, while also creating opportunities for our neighbours and being a respectful and contributive member of the community.

We employ local people where we can, from Bocachica and from other villages on Tierra Bomba and the islands around Cartagena.

Most of the tours and activities we offer are owned and run by local people. We are also proud to support the Green Apple Foundation, which provides jobs through recycling.

Sol y Luna

Peru

Sol y Luna authentically reflects the rich Andean culture and allows us to share the beauty of the Sacred Valley with our guests while generating the income to support the Sol y Luna Intercultural School.

My name is Marie Hélene Miribel, but everybody calls me simply Petit. Following my heart, I left a successful corporate life for the Sacred Valley of the Incas, to live my dream of improving the future for some of the world’s poorest children. In my husband Franz, I met the perfect match. I have tons of ideas for how to educate these children, and Franz possesses the gifts to build and realize these audacious dreams.

In 1999, we started an education project for the local children, many of whom walked for hours each day to get to a school in poor condition or did not go at all. Working within the existing social fabric proved invaluable to understanding the realities of schools and families around the Sacred Valley. To support our education initiatives in the most economically sustainable way given Sacred Valley’s potential for tourism, in 2000 we decided to build a hotel.

Wild Bush Luxury

Australia

Australia’s landscapes are some of the oldest on Earth and having been isolated for 45 million years, we are one of the most biologically unique and diverse countries on Earth, with more than 80% of flora and fauna species endemic to our environments.

Two hundred years of European settlement has emphasised the fragility of our unique country with land clearance, the introduction of feral animals and invasive weeds substantially impacting on the country’s biodiversity. Twenty two Australian mammal species have become extinct in the last 200 years (the highest rate of any country) and 20% of our remaining mammal species are also threatened with extinction. Climate change will only exacerbate this conservation challenge.

The Wild Bush Luxury portfolio offers guests a chance to see some of Australia’s most incredible and pristine environments, almost completely untouched by human settlement – the Top End and Flinders Ranges.

South Africa is Africa’s most popular and best-developed travel destination is famed for its sun-soaked beaches and vast game reserves, but it also provides exceptional opportunities to indulge in pursuits as varied as wine-tasting, hiking and museum-hopping.

South Africa is a land of extraordinary natural wealth and variety. Indeed, one recent ecological survey ranked it as the third-most important country in the world in terms of biodiversity. The Big Five – lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino – roam freely through South Africa’s premier safari destination, the vast Kruger National Park, along with a host of other iconic large mammals.

Ulusaba Private Game Reserve

As do all of Sir Richard Branson’s retreats, Ulusaba Private Game Reserve, with 20 rooms and suites, prides itself on offering a completely personal and exclusive experience. Here on the edge of the vast Kruger National Park, you’ll track the “big five” in open vehicles while knowledgeable guides educate you about the animals and their habitats. Set along the banks of the Sabie River and attracting abundant “big five” wildlife from Sabi Sand Game Reserve and Kruger National Park, Lion Sands has four luxurious lodges: River Lodge, Ivory Lodge, Tinga Lodge, and Narina Lodge. To get above the bush, reserve one of the three Treehouse experiences. Enjoy daily game drives, nature walks, a hippo tour, and a bush dinner with stargazing. Visit the local Huntington village to meet the children and teachers of Henna and Jabez preschools, via Lion Sands’ community outreach program.

Shamwari Private Game Reserve

Don’t be surprised to see African wildlife wandering right by one of the lodges at Shamwari Private Game Reserve. These tucked-away accommodations put nature at the reserve’s doorstep, with amenities like secluded plunge pools, indoor and outdoor dining areas, fireplaces, and expansive decks overlooking the Bushman’s River. Plus, every aspect of a stay is customized to each groups’ needs from gourmet meals and relaxing spa treatments to immersive game drives and guided photography safaris.

Singita Sabi Sand

Set along the banks of the Sand River in Sabi Sand Game Reserve, Singita Sabi Sand offers guests exclusive access to this protected part of South Africa, known for high concentrations of big game. Guests may choose between Singita Ebony Lodge, a contemporary safari lodge; Singita Boulders Lodge, inspired by nature; or Singita Castleton, a private-use, villa-style home. Singita Sabi Sand offers a safari with fine dining, wines, and world-class service, along with daily activities. Singita’s long-term commitment to the preservation of Africa’s wilderness for future generations shines through in conservation and community work.

Tswalu Kalahari

Tswalu Kalahari strives to “restore the Kalahari to itself.” To achieve this enlightened mission, Tswalu allows just 30 guests the privilege of experiencing the vast savannas and diverse wildlife of South Africa’s largest private game reserve; each booking receives a private vehicle, guide, and tracker. Accommodations include the five-suite Tarkuni, which comes with a chef, swimming pool, and a private vehicle. Sextantio - Rwanda

March 2022

Traditional huts in the style of the Ethnographic Museum of Rwanda in Butare, made out of local materials following local traditions and with inhabited huts already found in the northern part of Nkombo island, with views over the various islands and both Rwandan and Congolese territory.

The area where the huts are positioned is located on the northern tip of Nkombo Island on Lake Kivu, and is the part, which is furthest away from the mainland, it has the lowest population density and is inhabited by a Muslim minority, who, despite their poverty, are known for their particularly elegant styles of female dress.

As on the rest of the island, life in our huts will also be one of self-subsistence through the farming of our land and the livestock rearing that characterise the local household economy. Crops and animals are those traditionally found in equatorial villages with a few local peculiarities distinct to the island.

Gleneagles Townhouse

March 2022

Gleneagles’ first city hotel, all-day restaurant, roof terrace, and members’ club is coming to Edinburgh’s St. Andrew Square. There are 33 guestrooms embrace our noble building’s heritage. A 5-star hotel just a few minutes from Amalfi, where you can experience the luxury of a world created for your well-being. Nestled 90 meters above sea level, the resort-style hotel features 29 fully serviced rooms and 16 luxurious suites which offer uninterrupted views in one of the world’s most romantic destinations.

Four Seasons Tamarindo - Mexico

April 2022

Escape to a secluded natural reserve in Mexico’s Tamarindo, the pristine coastline where verdant jungle meets the Pacific Ocean. With its unique location on a private peninsula, Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo invites you to leave the world behind and explore this undiscovered region of Mexico – far from everything, yet remotely close.

This particular topography, and the wildlife that calls it home, make the area a treasure to be protected. Within a natural reserve spanning 1,214 hectares (3,000 acres), nestled on a private peninsula, featuring 10 kilometers of coastline, three swimmable beaches, and several hidden coves to snorkel. Named after the only tamarind tree found in this vast nature sanctuary, the resort features a dramatic 200-meter cliff descending to the beachfront below. Reflecting deep respect for the environment, only 2% of the reserve will be developed, giving a pure experience of this natural utopia.

Aman New York - USA

May 2022

Opening soon, Aman unveils a new urban sanctuary with the rebirth of an architectural icon at the heart of Manhattan. Since 1921, the Crown Building has presided over the midpoint of Manhattan; the corner of Fifth Avenue and 57th Street, overlooking Central Park. Rising 26 storeys from the boutique-lined street, the building’s windows and terraces look out over the vast sweep of parkland and survey the world’s most recognisable skyline.

The Crown Building – formerly the first home of Museum of Modern Art – has undergone a monumental transformation, which has seen it fully restored to its original splendour and imbued with the spirit of Aman. Designed by Jean-Michel Gathy, the hotel celebrates Aman’s philosophy of creating sanctuaries beyond commonplace notions of luxury, whilst paying homage to the building’s striking architecture and significant history.

Aman New York will consist of 83 hotel rooms, as well as restaurants, a Garden Terrace & Bar with 7000 square feet of outdoor dining space, private members club, three-floor Aman Spa, Jazz Club and Wine Room.

andBeyond Grumeti Serengeti - Tanzania

June 2022

&BEYOND Grumeti Serengeti River Lodge is located in the remote western reaches of the Serengeti. Due to its far-flung location, there are very few lodges in this pristine section of the park, which means that guests can expect the ultimate in exclusivity. The lodge is perfectly situated on the banks of a tributary of the Grumeti River. Using the natural bow shape of the river, and paying homage to the circular forms of a traditional Masai manyatta, the lodge unfolds to reveal an understated sense of luxury.

Touching the earth lightly and seemingly floating across the landscape, 10 nostalgically elegant, and very spacious, guest suites offer natural light, an enormous bed, bath, an indoor shower (with a spectacular view), and a sparkling private plunge pool. A new family suite has been incorporated featuring a small additional bedroom attached.

Twice-daily game drives from the lodge often encounter large lion prides and clans of hyena, big herds of resident plains game as well as the special black-and-white colobus monkeys, found nowhere else in the Serengeti. Rarely seeing other vehicles makes for an exceptional game viewing experience.

Rosewood Vienna - Austria

Described as a ‘holistic and sensorial experience,’ on the banks of the 63,000 hectares of Sabi Sands Private Game Reserve, Chitwa Chitwa is undeniably one of the most luxurious offerings in Kruger National Park.

Fall in love with the immersive indoor-outdoor suites that overlook the watering hole that attracts a plethora of wildlife, as well as dinner by candlelight. You will be awed by the architectural and chic interior design of Chitwa House, complete with your dedicated house butler and guide, spacious private deck with pool, and outdoor showers.

Angama Mara - Kenya

Angama in Swahili means ‘suspended in mid-air,’ which is apropos for its positioning over Africa’s Great Rift Valley. This would make for a perfect buy-out for large families and friends looking to visit the Mara, offering two separate camps with 15 suites.

Float over the plains by hot-air balloon, experience a Shamba-to-Table long lunch, take advantage of their mobile tented Safari Camp when following the Great Migration and make the most of the experienced and knowledgeable guides along the journey.

&Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge - Tanzania

As &Beyond puts it, their Ngorongoro Crater Lodge is “where Maasai meets Versailles, themed in romance on the rim of the ancient caldera,” nearly 3 million years old! A shelter that transports you back in time through its tribes and dramatic gorges, with an opportunity to interact with the KopeLion Conservation team that fosters a close existence with these majestic cats.

Choose from 3 camps and 30 dreamy suites, all offering grass roofs and banana leaf ceilings to get closer to Nature and aligned with the spectacular setting of the cauldron below.

Singita Pamushana - Zimbabwe

Boasting only eight suites with suspended private plunge pools, Zimbabwe’s ancient tribal history takes centre stage at the remote Singita Pamushana, nestled within 130,000 acres of the Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve.

The black and white rhino population and rare antelope species are significant at this reserve. A restorative nature-immersive experience is key here, whether through game drives, fireplace storytelling, sundowner boat cruises or treks to rock art sites.

Santorini Mozambique - Mozambique

A coastal escape that blends a Grecian village against the wilderness of the Bazaruto archipelago, Santorini Mozambique is an unexpected and unpretentious addition that will exceed your expectations with their authentic, personal touch. Embracing the good life, go horse-riding on the beach, scuba diving and kite surfing, or just linger by the tranquil pool and watch the day pass from your private patio.

Booking eight days in April could allow those who work Monday to Friday to get 16 days off work.

Good Friday falls on April 15, with Easter Monday on April 18, so booking four days off either side leads to a 16-day break.

This means you get Saturday 9 April to Sunday 24 April off for eight days annual leave.

WHERE TO GO IN APRIL: Caribbean (Sun) // Alps (Snow)

May

TIP: Book off: May 3 to May 6 to get April 30 to May 8 off

Booking four days off after May 2 – the May Day bank holiday – gives nine days off for the price of four.

This means you get Saturday April 30 to Sunday May 8 for four days of annual leave

WHERE TO GO IN MAY: Europe (City Break) // Botswana (Safari)

June

TIP: Book off: May 30 to June 1 to get off May 28 to June 5

This year is the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee which means the nation will get an extra bank holiday.

While February 6 will mark her 70 years on the throne, Britain won’t celebrate until June, when a four-day weekend is planned for festivities.

To make that work, the May Bank Holiday weekend will be moved to Thursday, June 2, while Friday, June 3, will be turned into a bank holiday.

With June’s Platinum Jubilee weekend, if you book off May 30 to June 1, you get nine days off for just three of annual leave.

WHERE TO GO IN JUNE: San Sebastian (Couples) // Balaeric Islands (Family/Friends)

August

TIP: Book off: August 30 to September 2 to get August 27 to September 4 off

WHERE TO GO IN SEPTEMBER: South Africa (Garden Route) // Greece (Couples / Young Families)
