Seeking Starshine and Aurora Borealis

As night falls and the mysteries of our universe reveal themselves, we turn our heads towards the vast skies and stand in awe of its grandeur. Whether you’re a budding stargazer or an experienced astrophile, opportunities for stargazing and witnessing the Northern Lights phenomenon in all its glory are waiting to be discovered. There is a spiritual quality to spotting planets, nebulas and constellations sparkle above, demanding a sense of wonder and presence that frees your mind from obligations. Take part in this ancient wisdom and storytelling that will capture your attention and spark your imagination, no matter the age.

OCTOLA Private Wilderness - Lapland, Finland

Chasing the Aurora Borealis can be an elusive activity, whose hunt is successful based on solar flares and a little bit of luck. As the particles reach Earth, magical shades dance and hang mystically in the sky; in the remote wilderness of Lapland, Octola’s secluded lodge at the Arctic Circle is the best location to spot this phenomenon from September to early April, where you’ll feel totally one with Nature.

The Atacama desert is a wild, windswept and dreamy corner of the Earth, where their lunar-like landscapes and dazzling night skies are simply otherworldly and shrouded in silence. Positioned at high altitude and devoid of light pollution, seek shelter in Nayara‘s Ckepi Observatory as you feast upon an ‘endless expanse’ of nebulae, moon craters, and possibly supernovae from December to March.

Staying local in the UK

Often, when we think “holiday”, we think “jet-set to another country”. With the pound at a slump, now is the perfect time to explore whats here in the United Kingdom. With rolling hills, beaches that make you think you’re in the Med, and an abundance of gorgeous walks and lakes, you’ll be hard-pressed to not find something to do or see. Pack up the car, hit the road and discover this wonderful country.

The Newt

Somerset, England

The Newt’s core is Georgian, with limestone buildings the colour of burnt honey, the seat of the Hobhouse family for more than two centuries. Hadspen and the Farmyard nestle quietly amongst orchards, lakes and woodland that reflect the love lavished upon them over the past 300 years.

The main house was built in the 17th century, then remodelled in Georgian times. Capturing the essence of a Georgian family home, its restrained, classical beauty is offset by playful design; while the original working Stable Yard has been transformed into sophisticated accommodation, retaining characteristics harking back to its equestrian past.

The Farmyard is just beyond the cyder orchards, half a mile from Hadspen as the crow flies, this former dairy farm is a place to spread out and lean back, cheek-to-rosy-cheek with grazing livestock and sheltering oaks. Original farm buildings, with a delightfully golden patina, are home to rooms, a pool, bar, snug and all-day kitchen. Complimentary drinks are available at the Garner Bar, while bikes and buggies provide ample opportunity for pootling over to the gardens and spa at Hadspen.

Cameron House

Loch Lomond, Scotland

Standing on the peaceful southern shores of Loch Lomond occupying over 400 acres of magnificent woodland, Cameron House is an 17th century baronial mansion offering deluxe accommodation, award winning cuisine, superb leisure and outdoor pursuits. In addition, our championship golf course “Carrick on Loch Lomond” and exclusive spa provides an inspirational setting. With interiors that are almost as dramatic as the exterior of the manor, our stunning residence evokes character and comfort at every turn; we’re sure you will adore our impressive setting and the elegance that spans centuries.

Built 350 years ago for the Duke of Buckingham’s mistress and backdrop for the scandalous Profumo affair, this sprawling 48-room estate – set upon 376 National Trust-designated acres – has fostered the illustrious and the illicit. It cultivates a cultured stay with antique furnishings, period artworks, four-poster beds, and fireplaces; the meticulously tended grounds include a maze and the celebrated parterre. Take a walk through the woodlands or a dip in the pool before dining in the Cliveden Dining Room, or for a more informal experience, try The Astor Grill.

Heckfield Place

Hook, England

Heckfield Place could be the setting for a Jane Austen novel – the author lived in nearby Chawton. Inside this 45-room Georgian family home, however, lies a reimagined Hampshire retreat that makes ample use of local materials, such as English oak furnishings and handwoven rugs made of rushes from the River Ouse. The 438-acre estate is blanketed in ancient heathers and woodlands, with two lakes and walled gardens for contemplative strolls. A biodynamic farm provides fresh produce and honey for chef Skye Gyngell to work her Michelin-starred magic, as well as herbs for healing spa treatments.

Exclusive Virtuoso Amenities when booking with us:

  • Upgrade on arrival, subject to availability
  • Daily full breakfast for up to two guests per bedroom
  • $100 USD equivalent Food & Beverage credit to be utilized during stay (not combinable, not valid on room rate, no cash value if not redeemed in full)

Coworth Park

Hampshire, England

Coworth Park is located next to Windsor Great Park, near Ascot. It sits in 240 acres of meadow, which, in summer, offer up a hazy carpet of yellow, lavender and pink wild flowers. The house was built in 1776 and its many incarnations throughout history have included an all-girls school and the home of Lords and Ladies.

Today its look is modern-day country house – the 17th-century mansion and polo estate has been treated to an intelligent and eco-friendly modern makeover that’s given it three restaurants (including one with a Michelin star), a spectacular spa and an air of quietly confident grandeur.

The spa sits in timber and glass building, topped with a ‘living roof’ of thyme and lavender and set into the side of a hill. Facilities include a blue-lit pool with underwater music, steam rooms, mood showers and a gym. There are eight light-filled treatment rooms.

Exclusive Diamond Club Amenities when booking with us:

  • Guaranteed one category Upgrade at the time of booking
  • Full breakfast for two every day, including in-room dining
  • £100 credit per day per suite, credited to the final bill
  • Unlimited high-speed WIFI for any number of device

Travel As A Force For Good

We are a proud member of The Conscious Travel Foundation which is a global community, uniting members of the travel industry to reshape the impact of tourism on the world. We believe in the power of education and collaboration to fuel a shift in industry practice, igniting change and safeguarding the planet for future generations.

Whilst it can be seen the devastating effects of the climate change on our world, we are hopeful that going forward travel can still provide a positive impact on communities around the planet.

There are many inspiring stories from properties looking to make the changes necessary in order to preserve what we have. The resilience of communities ad habitats across the world is a sign that we can do better, and we must all learn how we can do things ourselves in order to best protect our future generations.

Below are some of the inspiring stories from some properties from across the world.

The Lodge at Blue Sky

United States

Blue Sky uses no plastic water bottles and offers guests an insulated, reusable bottle during their stay, which they can take home with them. Blue Sky uses biodegradable plant-based straws. Picnic utensils are made of bamboo.

In-room Bath Products
All of our bath salts are sourced from the Great Salt Lake and are very mineral-rich. Our shampoo, conditioner, soap and lotion are specially made with sage essential oil that has been distilled from wild sage harvested from Blue Sky’s property.

Teardrop Hotels

Sri Lanka

From the very beginning sustainability and community have been at the very heart of the Teardrop story. We love this island home of ours and passionately believe in making a positive impact wherever possible. Our core beliefs sit behind everything we do and we constantly look for new ways to have a positive social and environmental impact.

Restoration and transformation

This is a great passion of ours; Saving and restoring beautiful, often abandoned, old buildings and reimagining and transforming them into inspiring fusions of old and new.

Each of our properties is totally unique and many have been saved from ruin. Heritage buildings and vintage tea bungalows were carefully chosen for their character and have been lovingly restored. Wherever possible, we preserve their original features and let their architecture inspire our contemporary interiors.

Tiger Mountain - Pokhara Lodge

Nepal

Tiger Mountain, since its start has been at the forefront of responsible tourism. This covers all our stakeholders: our guests, employees, local communities, and government. We strive to minimise our impacts be they environmental, social, or corporate and to support our local communities’ own development initiatives. This is through our Community Support Partnership Programme that supports Community Forest User Groups, local schools, health posts, local national and international charities, environmental research and monitoring, advocacy, and media.

As we have evolved through the thought processes of eco-tourism and wider sustainable tourism, we now seek to develop concepts appropriate to the middle hills of Nepal for truly Regenerative Tourism – a leap beyond somewhat passive sustainability to reverse damaging trends to regenerate the environment and communities so that all can thrive – in so doing we provide a deeper level of transformational journey for our guests through a rich sense of place and an immersive experience of life in the middle hills of Nepal. Through authentic experiences, engagement with the local community, integrating with the forest and mountain landscape, understanding the rhythms of life, we create a fuller engagement than just the change from work to holiday. This, in turn, must co-evolve with a more holistic approach to local communities and their aspirations for development. Tiger Mountain aims to be the bridge between the guests’ transformation and the community’s aspirations.

The Sujan Life

India

Our Vision: To preserve and protect parts of the Indian wilderness as well as our diverse cultural heritage for future generations.

A Family dedicated to Conservation

Our family has a legacy of working with wildlife through filming, monitoring, researching and creating awareness about tigers in Ranthambhore for generations. In 1974, when Tejbir and Malvika followed a narrow, winding road it led them to the base of the ancient fort of Ranthambhore. In 1988, they co-established The Ranthambhore Foundation, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), working closely with the development of villages around the park boundaries. As a child, Jaisal learnt the lay of the land by walking through every inch of the park; forbidden under today’s regulations. He was taught animal tracking and bush craft skills as a toddler under the tutelage of his father Tejbir, the late Fateh Singh Rathore and his uncle Valmik Thapar – regarded as India’s leading wildlife experts and conservationists.

The Safari Series

Kenya

One of our post-covid promises includes the promise to provide an experience that is “not once in a lifetime, but for your lifetime”

BUT WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

In so much marketing, you see around the promotion of a safari or safari camp you are likely to read the words ‘a trip of a lifetime!’. This is, honestly, because most safari experiences are very expensive and most people who visit Kenya can only afford to come on a trip that happens once in their lives. But this doesn’t need to be the case – many travelers or families go to the same place time and time again, especially if it was a place they felt a real affinity for.

Sustainability is a real ‘buzzword’, but what does really mean? Can travel, which can be incredibly bad for the environment if done without thought, really help sustain a landscape for the future? At The Safari Series, we think so. In fact, it is built into the core of what we do.

The Datai Langkawi

Malaysia

Nature sits at the very core of The Datai Langkawi’s DNA – it is an integral part of who we are and what makes us unique. The wonderful natural setting and the environmental features – the sea, mangroves and ancient virgin rainforest – provide the very foundations for our offering of nature-related experiences combined with holistic and well-being programmes.

Just as nature has gifted us our environment and its fascinating inhabitants, we have a responsibility to conserve and strengthen nature’s increasingly fragile resources and to reduce the negative impact of our footprint on the environment. This responsibility – which has evolved into The Datai Pledge – has culminated into a robust programme of initiatives with the single-minded objective of creating a sustainable environment for the future. The Datai Pledge programme not only benefits the living creatures who share this spectacular island with us but also enriches the lives of our guests, team members and the local community through meaningful participation.

The Datai Pledge programme comprises a series of initiatives relating to our business operations, the land, sea, and youth. These four elements correspond to the four pillars of our programme: Pure for the Future; Wildlife for the Future; Fish for the Future; and Youth for the Future, respectively.

Blue Apple Beach

Colombia

Bocachica is an under-served village on an undeveloped island. The roads are not paved and there is still no running water. Access to education is limited, unemployment is high, and those lucky enough to find work must often support entire families on the Colombian minimum wage of less than $10 a day.

But like all people, all over, Bocachiqueros are proud, charming, hard working and ambitious for themselves, their families and their community.

As one of the only sources of formal employment in the area, Blue Apple’s goal as a business is to offer guests the best experience possible, while also creating opportunities for our neighbours and being a respectful and contributive member of the community.

We employ local people where we can, from Bocachica and from other villages on Tierra Bomba and the islands around Cartagena.

Most of the tours and activities we offer are owned and run by local people. We are also proud to support the Green Apple Foundation, which provides jobs through recycling.

Sol y Luna

Peru

Sol y Luna authentically reflects the rich Andean culture and allows us to share the beauty of the Sacred Valley with our guests while generating the income to support the Sol y Luna Intercultural School.

My name is Marie Hélene Miribel, but everybody calls me simply Petit. Following my heart, I left a successful corporate life for the Sacred Valley of the Incas, to live my dream of improving the future for some of the world’s poorest children. In my husband Franz, I met the perfect match. I have tons of ideas for how to educate these children, and Franz possesses the gifts to build and realize these audacious dreams.

In 1999, we started an education project for the local children, many of whom walked for hours each day to get to a school in poor condition or did not go at all. Working within the existing social fabric proved invaluable to understanding the realities of schools and families around the Sacred Valley. To support our education initiatives in the most economically sustainable way given Sacred Valley’s potential for tourism, in 2000 we decided to build a hotel.

Wild Bush Luxury

Australia

Australia’s landscapes are some of the oldest on Earth and having been isolated for 45 million years, we are one of the most biologically unique and diverse countries on Earth, with more than 80% of flora and fauna species endemic to our environments.

Two hundred years of European settlement has emphasised the fragility of our unique country with land clearance, the introduction of feral animals and invasive weeds substantially impacting on the country’s biodiversity. Twenty two Australian mammal species have become extinct in the last 200 years (the highest rate of any country) and 20% of our remaining mammal species are also threatened with extinction. Climate change will only exacerbate this conservation challenge.

The Wild Bush Luxury portfolio offers guests a chance to see some of Australia’s most incredible and pristine environments, almost completely untouched by human settlement – the Top End and Flinders Ranges.

Favourite Game Reserves in South Africa

South Africa is Africa’s most popular and best-developed travel destination is famed for its sun-soaked beaches and vast game reserves, but it also provides exceptional opportunities to indulge in pursuits as varied as wine-tasting, hiking and museum-hopping.

South Africa is a land of extraordinary natural wealth and variety. Indeed, one recent ecological survey ranked it as the third-most important country in the world in terms of biodiversity. The Big Five – lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino – roam freely through South Africa’s premier safari destination, the vast Kruger National Park, along with a host of other iconic large mammals.

Ulusaba Private Game Reserve

As do all of Sir Richard Branson’s retreats, Ulusaba Private Game Reserve, with 20 rooms and suites, prides itself on offering a completely personal and exclusive experience. Here on the edge of the vast Kruger National Park, you’ll track the “big five” in open vehicles while knowledgeable guides educate you about the animals and their habitats. And although you’re deep in the African bush, you’ll experience the five-star luxury you would expect at a fine boutique hotel – from world-class spa treatments in the Aroma Boma Spa to remarkable cuisine and fine wines shared with other fortunate guests.

Lion Sands Private Game Reserve

You’re treated like family at Lion Sands Game Reserve, owned by the More family for four generations. Set along the banks of the Sabie River and attracting abundant “big five” wildlife from Sabi Sand Game Reserve and Kruger National Park, Lion Sands has four luxurious lodges: River Lodge, Ivory Lodge, Tinga Lodge, and Narina Lodge. To get above the bush, reserve one of the three Treehouse experiences. Enjoy daily game drives, nature walks, a hippo tour, and a bush dinner with stargazing. Visit the local Huntington village to meet the children and teachers of Henna and Jabez preschools, via Lion Sands’ community outreach program.

Shamwari Private Game Reserve

Don’t be surprised to see African wildlife wandering right by one of the lodges at Shamwari Private Game Reserve. These tucked-away accommodations put nature at the reserve’s doorstep, with amenities like secluded plunge pools, indoor and outdoor dining areas, fireplaces, and expansive decks overlooking the Bushman’s River. Plus, every aspect of a stay is customized to each groups’ needs from gourmet meals and relaxing spa treatments to immersive game drives and guided photography safaris.

Singita Sabi Sand

Set along the banks of the Sand River in Sabi Sand Game Reserve, Singita Sabi Sand offers guests exclusive access to this protected part of South Africa, known for high concentrations of big game. Guests may choose between Singita Ebony Lodge, a contemporary safari lodge; Singita Boulders Lodge, inspired by nature; or Singita Castleton, a private-use, villa-style home. Singita Sabi Sand offers a safari with fine dining, wines, and world-class service, along with daily activities. Singita’s long-term commitment to the preservation of Africa’s wilderness for future generations shines through in conservation and community work.

Tswalu Kalahari

Tswalu Kalahari strives to “restore the Kalahari to itself.” To achieve this enlightened mission, Tswalu allows just 30 guests the privilege of experiencing the vast savannas and diverse wildlife of South Africa’s largest private game reserve; each booking receives a private vehicle, guide, and tracker. Accommodations include the five-suite Tarkuni, which comes with a chef, swimming pool, and a private vehicle. In Motse, nine individual legae dwellings – including three for families – offer a fireplace, outdoor shower, and private deck.
