Seeking Starshine and Aurora Borealis

As night falls and the mysteries of our universe reveal themselves, we turn our heads towards the vast skies and stand in awe of its grandeur. Whether you’re a budding stargazer or an experienced astrophile, opportunities for stargazing and witnessing the Northern Lights phenomenon in all its glory are waiting to be discovered. There is a spiritual quality to spotting planets, nebulas and constellations sparkle above, demanding a sense of wonder and presence that frees your mind from obligations. Take part in this ancient wisdom and storytelling that will capture your attention and spark your imagination, no matter the age.

OCTOLA Private Wilderness - Lapland, Finland

Chasing the Aurora Borealis can be an elusive activity, whose hunt is successful based on solar flares and a little bit of luck. As the particles reach Earth, magical shades dance and hang mystically in the sky; in the remote wilderness of Lapland, Octola’s secluded lodge at the Arctic Circle is the best location to spot this phenomenon from September to early April, where you’ll feel totally one with Nature.

Nayara Alto Atacama - Atacama Desert, Chile

The Atacama desert is a wild, windswept and dreamy corner of the Earth, where their lunar-like landscapes and dazzling night skies are simply otherworldly and shrouded in silence. Positioned at high altitude and devoid of light pollution, seek shelter in Nayara‘s Ckepi Observatory as you feast upon an ‘endless expanse’ of nebulae, moon craters, and possibly supernovae from December to March.

Kwessi Dunes - NamibRand Nature Reserve, Namibia

Deep in NamibRand Nature Reserve, stretching over 200,000 hectares, the iconic red dunes and dramatic mountains are the perfect backdrop for one of the least light-polluted areas in the world with skies that come alive at night. Each of their 12 chalets comes with a separate ‘stargazer’ room in open air for ‘maximum galaxy-gazing’ that will lull you into a sweet slumber from May to November.

Soneva Kiri - Koh Kood Island, Thailand

Koh Kood is a hidden gem of Thailand far from the mainland, and best seen from November to January, you can peer into ‘star-strewn heavens’ at the state-of-the-art Observatory with Soneva’s resident Astronomer. Discover the Riches of Africa

We’re exploring the vastness and the contrasts of the African sub-continent this week, featuring six ways to engage with wonderful places, experiences and cultures we think you’ll adore…

Sterrekopje, Franschhoek, South Africa

So, it’s not a hotel – they’re emphatic about that – but this is certainly a place where you’ll relax and unwind entirely, while reconnecting to nature and food so fresh that it could have been harvested just minutes before you tuck in. Sterrekopje is a remote farm nestling in the foothills of the Franschhoek mountains, where over many years the natural balance of the land has been restored and cherished to make it as fertile and sustainable as possible. The biodiverse abundance means 100 different items of fresh produce are grown on-site, miles away from anywhere. You’ll be staying in an elegantly comfortable farmhouse or one of the cottages enfolded by lush nature, and while you enjoy the sanctuary you’ll be reconnecting with your soul – and looking forward to another leisurely dinner under the stars.

Eagle Island Lodge, Okavango Delta, Botswana

There are few places to match the Okavango Delta wetlands to experience a magical and satisfying safari. It’s at its very best from May to September – so think about your trip next year, maybe – when you can glide silently through the natural water channels in a traditional-style canoe, with hippos wallowing either side of you and sea eagles soaring above. This Belmond lodge, is, as you might expect, on its own private island, and the dozen beautiful tented rooms have high ceilings, huge beds and their own plunge pools. They have privacy and wonderful outlooks in equal measure. By staying here you’ll be helping projects to harmlessly separate local livestock from endangered local predators, and to save Africa’s wild dogs.

Virtuoso travelers receive:

For 2023:

  • Daily Full Breakfast for up to two guests per bedroom
  • Private dining experience for up to two guests once during stay, served on the balcony of your room or at a private location within the lodge (must have minimum value of $100 USD equivalent)
  • Early Check-In / Late Check-Out, subject to availability
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi

Serra Cafema, Kaokoland, Namibia

It’s not just animals that are rare, fascinating and in need of traveller support; it’s people too. Namibia’a Himba are some of this stunning country’s last semi-nomads. This is their wide-ranging home, an untouched wilderness of silent deserts and rushing rivers where they have learned to adapt to life alongside everything from oryx and tiny chameleons to crocodiles and zebra. Staying here helps to maintain and protect the delicate balance between all of Serra Cafema’s inhabitants. In exchange, you’ll return each day from all kinds of guided safaris – boat, walking, even quad-biking – to sultry luxury in one of eight suites built from wood, canvas and thatch, with elevated decks to watch the orangeness of the sinking sun intensify… having put away a hearty and local supper.

andBeyond Bateleur Camp, Masai Mara, Kenya

Reflecting the ambience of 1920s and 1930s classic Kenyan safaris, andBeyond Bateleur Camp boasts luxurious safari tents complete with private butler service, ceiling fans and spacious ensuite bathrooms. In close proximity to where the famous final scene of ‘Out of Africa’ was filmed, this magnificent camp is set on a private concession allowing one to explore by day or night, on foot or in a vehicle in the company of your expert safari guide. In the late afternoon, head out in open safari vehicles, and in the evenings have an exclusive experience, a night safari which offers an opportunity to seek out nocturnal wildlife.

Virtuoso travelers receive:

For 2022:

  • Upgrade not applicable for this property
  • Daily breakfast (included in rates)
  • A uniquely and authentic welcome gift on arrival
  • Early Check-In / Late Check-Out, subject to availability
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi

Victoria Falls River Lodge, Zambezi, Zimbabwe

So close to the Victoria Falls that you can see the mist thrown up by that tumbling crescendo of water, you’ll be staying on Khandahar Island with epic views of the Zambesi river… and you can only get there by boat. Nature teems around you both in the water and on land, where wild elephants spend their days semi-oblivious to the admirers close by. Accommodation is in a series of specially-built treehouse suites, connected by wooden walkways to the lounge, dining area and sunset bar, and the levels of luxury are splendid. The ultimate stay is in one of the two Starbed Treehouses, built spectacularly over two levels above the tree-tops. Not one for the under-16s, mind.

Virtuoso travelers receive:

For 2023:

  • Upgrade on arrival, subject to availability
  • Daily Breakfast for up to two guests per bedroom
  • Complimentary 50-minute massage per person, for up to two guests per room, once during stay (must have minimum value of $100 USD equivalent)
  • Early Check-In / Late Check-Out, subject to availability
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi

  • Early check-in / Late check-out, subject to availability
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi

ÀNI PRIVATE RESORTS

We love ÀNI private resorts and the way they make it easy to arrange a luxury, all-inclusive* group stay.  Established in 2010 ÀNI – the word is Swahili for “the journey ahead” – pours its close attention into truly beautiful and secluded estates that can be booked exclusively for you and your family and/or friends. The whole place, with no-one else there except the special people you choose, and amazing staff to indulge you…

ÀNI Anguilla

This wonderful island, the most northern of the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean, is a short hop from Miami, and you’ll search long and hard for anywhere with better sandy white beaches – they stretch for miles and miles. The ÀNI resort here sits on an amazing clifftop above Little Bay, and there’s room for parties of between six and 20 in what could be accurately termed “commanding privacy”. Half-board dining and an amazing number of activities are included; there’s a host of energetic or cultural things to do, from water sports including amazing diving, to day-long exploration adventures, plus a lovely on-site spa.

ÀNI Dominican Republic

Claiming its own private peninsula on the Dominican Republic’s north coast, this private resort nestles in manicured gardens with breathtaking, 270-degree views of the Atlantic Ocean and direct access to a sandy bay known as La Piscina Natural. It’s the birthplace of kite-surfing, so a natural magnet for watersport fanatics. There’s room for a party of a maximum 28 people, so you’ll never be jostled for an ocean view – whether it’s to watch the sun rise or see it set. As ever with ÀNI, the plentiful staff are anxious to please your whole party, whether that’s working with you on special dinners, organising cultural events, or coming up with inventive ways to keep children happy.

ÀNI Sri Lanka

A sweeping beachfront estate on five verdant acres of Sri Lanka’s south coast, this private resort set above a palm-fringed beach near Dickwella can accommodate up to 30 guests across 15 exceptional suites. They all overlook their own, vast infinity pools and the sea on either side of a lush lawn. The impeccable service is delivered by a 30-strong team, so close personal attention is guaranteed. The region is known for its teeming wildlife; you can marvel at the local reserves and national parks or enjoy the nature surrounding the resort in the local villages, rice paddies and cinnamon plantation. It’s pure bliss in the Indian Ocean.

ÀNI Thailand

You’ll find this paradise on Koh Yao Noi, with empty beaches, protected mangroves, fishing villages and picturesque rice paddies spread over 19 square miles. It’s a sanctuary for wildlife, including rare hornbills, sea otters and green turtles. With astounding ocean-front views from the spacious villas, there’s room for 20 guests; from personal fitness training and kids’ activities to Thai dance shows and guided cycling tours, there’s loads for everyone to do, even though you’re 30 minutes from the mainland. All food and drinks are included, and there’s all-day butler service on the beach. And if you seek pure reinvigoration then you can lose yourself in a daily spa routine of up to 10 treatments.

Adding to your WanderLuxe Bucket list

What we love most about travel is the seemingly endless variety to suit every individual’s tastes. Encompassing adrenaline-fuelled adventure in epic natural settings, culinary feasts for gastronomes, cultural highlights or historical tours to connect us to the past, the transformative aspect of luxury travel is simply undeniable. Surely you already have a few dream destinations that have piqued your interest, and our Ultimate WanderLuxe List aims to add to this growing inventory.

Plan ahead for your lifetime of travel, and dig deeper into these incredible experiences below.

Lion Sands Private Game Reserve

You may have done a few safaris, but have you ever slept among the treetops while gazing at the cosmos and hearing the sounds of nocturnal wildlife all around you? The overnight treehouse experience at Lion Sands Private Game Reserve – remote yet safe, and determindly free of connectivity or artificial light – puts you and your party in an architectural wooden wonder, at the heart of a world-famous natural wilderness. Enjoy daily game drives, nature walks, a hippo tour, and a bush dinner with stargazing. Visit the local Huntington village to meet the children and teachers of Henna and Jabez preschools, via Lion Sands’ community outreach program.

Ponant Le Commandant Charcot

Sail to the world’s polar extremes on a luxury liner that’s breaking new ground. Ponant’s latest ship, the Le Commandant Charcot, is the first of its kind anywhere with hybrid-electric power, using liquefied natural gas to make its imposing way across the seas – and keeping its environmental impact minimal on the extraordinary places it visits and the experiences you will have including kayaking, snowshoeing, polar diving, zodiac exploration, dog sledding and exploring the polar world through total immersion. Life on deck can be bracing, naturally, but inside the 123 suites and staterooms are more private yacht than cruise ship. You’ll be travelling to the unknown but the attentive service, concierge, hospitality and crew take home comforts to the max.

Mamula Island, Montenegro

Mamula Island is remote and weirdly stunning. It sits on its own, compact island surrounded by the deeply indigo water of the Adriatic in Montenegro’s Boka Bay, and is nothing less than a mightily impressive 19th century fort, repurposed for getting away from absolutely everything. Europe’s Alcatraz it definitely is not, though, because the food and drink are exceptional and flavoursome; it has its own pool deck; a luxury spa; pretty much a circular beach; and, of course, a unique atmosphere that virtually guarantees you’ll unwind.

White Desert

WHITE DESERT earns every ounce of its title as the most remote luxury camp on the planet. Join the ranks of previous guests like Prince Harry and Bear Grylls as you settle into your eco-friendly and unexpectedly opulent spherical cabin. Savour gourmet meals prepared by your private chef, enjoy a sauna with view of the glacier, sip cocktails by the fire, and cross off bucket list adventures like visiting the South Pole, ice climbing, hiking over ice waves, and coming face-to-face with 28,000 emperor penguins.

Virtuoso travelers receive:

For 2023:

  • Daily breakfast provided for up to two guests per accommodation
  • A donation of $100 USD per Virtuoso guest will be made to The Ocean Clean-Up, a non-profit organization developing advanced technologies to rid the oceans of plastic.
  • Early check-in and late checkout, subject to availability

Be one of the first to charter Coquelicot (meaning Poppy), an LVMH renovated barge for six lucky travellers, setting its inaugural sail in mid-May from Champagne. Maison Ruinart presents a ‘behind the scenes’ look at their viti-forestry project, as well as 5-course lunch paired with their prestige cuvées.

Nay Palad Hideaway, Philippines

At this paradisiacal location in Siargao far from the madding crowds, fall deeply in love with the poetry and pace that Nay Palad has beautifully devised. From the moment you set foot on the powdery-soft sand, the access to their private bay, mangrove forests, legendary surf spots and serene aesthetic will immediately ease your worries as you sink into a world of barefoot luxury. Everything you desire and feast upon is included in the package, as well as open-top Jeepney adventures to deep-sea fishing and a newly-opened Village featuring a modern kitchen for cooking classes and sublime Spa experiences. Travel As A Force For Good

We are a proud member of The Conscious Travel Foundation which is a global community, uniting members of the travel industry to reshape the impact of tourism on the world. We believe in the power of education and collaboration to fuel a shift in industry practice, igniting change and safeguarding the planet for future generations.

Whilst it can be seen the devastating effects of the climate change on our world, we are hopeful that going forward travel can still provide a positive impact on communities around the planet.

There are many inspiring stories from properties looking to make the changes necessary in order to preserve what we have. The resilience of communities ad habitats across the world is a sign that we can do better, and we must all learn how we can do things ourselves in order to best protect our future generations.

Below are some of the inspiring stories from some properties from across the world.

Tiger Mountain - Pokhara Lodge

Nepal

Tiger Mountain, since its start has been at the forefront of responsible tourism. This covers all our stakeholders: our guests, employees, local communities, and government. We strive to minimise our impacts be they environmental, social, or corporate and to support our local communities’ own development initiatives. This is through our Community Support Partnership Programme that supports Community Forest User Groups, local schools, health posts, local national and international charities, environmental research and monitoring, advocacy, and media.

As we have evolved through the thought processes of eco-tourism and wider sustainable tourism, we now seek to develop concepts appropriate to the middle hills of Nepal for truly Regenerative Tourism – a leap beyond somewhat passive sustainability to reverse damaging trends to regenerate the environment and communities so that all can thrive – in so doing we provide a deeper level of transformational journey for our guests through a rich sense of place and an immersive experience of life in the middle hills of Nepal. Through authentic experiences, engagement with the local community, integrating with the forest and mountain landscape, understanding the rhythms of life, we create a fuller engagement than just the change from work to holiday. This, in turn, must co-evolve with a more holistic approach to local communities and their aspirations for development. Tiger Mountain aims to be the bridge between the guests’ transformation and the community’s aspirations.

The Sujan Life

India

Our Vision: To preserve and protect parts of the Indian wilderness as well as our diverse cultural heritage for future generations.

A Family dedicated to Conservation

Our family has a legacy of working with wildlife through filming, monitoring, researching and creating awareness about tigers in Ranthambhore for generations. In 1974, when Tejbir and Malvika followed a narrow, winding road it led them to the base of the ancient fort of Ranthambhore. In 1988, they co-established The Ranthambhore Foundation, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), working closely with the development of villages around the park boundaries. As a child, Jaisal learnt the lay of the land by walking through every inch of the park; forbidden under today’s regulations. He was taught animal tracking and bush craft skills as a toddler under the tutelage of his father Tejbir, the late Fateh Singh Rathore and his uncle Valmik Thapar – regarded as India’s leading wildlife experts and conservationists.

The Safari Series

Kenya

One of our post-covid promises includes the promise to provide an experience that is “not once in a lifetime, but for your lifetime”

BUT WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

In so much marketing, you see around the promotion of a safari or safari camp you are likely to read the words ‘a trip of a lifetime!’. This is, honestly, because most safari experiences are very expensive and most people who visit Kenya can only afford to come on a trip that happens once in their lives. But this doesn’t need to be the case – many travelers or families go to the same place time and time again, especially if it was a place they felt a real affinity for.

Sustainability is a real ‘buzzword’, but what does really mean? Can travel, which can be incredibly bad for the environment if done without thought, really help sustain a landscape for the future? At The Safari Series, we think so. In fact, it is built into the core of what we do.

The Datai Langkawi

Malaysia

Nature sits at the very core of The Datai Langkawi’s DNA – it is an integral part of who we are and what makes us unique. The wonderful natural setting and the environmental features – the sea, mangroves and ancient virgin rainforest – provide the very foundations for our offering of nature-related experiences combined with holistic and well-being programmes.

Just as nature has gifted us our environment and its fascinating inhabitants, we have a responsibility to conserve and strengthen nature’s increasingly fragile resources and to reduce the negative impact of our footprint on the environment. This responsibility – which has evolved into The Datai Pledge – has culminated into a robust programme of initiatives with the single-minded objective of creating a sustainable environment for the future. The Datai Pledge programme not only benefits the living creatures who share this spectacular island with us but also enriches the lives of our guests, team members and the local community through meaningful participation.

The Datai Pledge programme comprises a series of initiatives relating to our business operations, the land, sea, and youth. These four elements correspond to the four pillars of our programme: Pure for the Future; Wildlife for the Future; Fish for the Future; and Youth for the Future, respectively.

Blue Apple Beach

Colombia

Bocachica is an under-served village on an undeveloped island. The roads are not paved and there is still no running water. Access to education is limited, unemployment is high, and those lucky enough to find work must often support entire families on the Colombian minimum wage of less than $10 a day.

But like all people, all over, Bocachiqueros are proud, charming, hard working and ambitious for themselves, their families and their community.

As one of the only sources of formal employment in the area, Blue Apple’s goal as a business is to offer guests the best experience possible, while also creating opportunities for our neighbours and being a respectful and contributive member of the community.

We employ local people where we can, from Bocachica and from other villages on Tierra Bomba and the islands around Cartagena.

Most of the tours and activities we offer are owned and run by local people. We are also proud to support the Green Apple Foundation, which provides jobs through recycling.

Sol y Luna

Peru

Sol y Luna authentically reflects the rich Andean culture and allows us to share the beauty of the Sacred Valley with our guests while generating the income to support the Sol y Luna Intercultural School.

My name is Marie Hélene Miribel, but everybody calls me simply Petit. Following my heart, I left a successful corporate life for the Sacred Valley of the Incas, to live my dream of improving the future for some of the world’s poorest children. In my husband Franz, I met the perfect match. I have tons of ideas for how to educate these children, and Franz possesses the gifts to build and realize these audacious dreams.

In 1999, we started an education project for the local children, many of whom walked for hours each day to get to a school in poor condition or did not go at all. Working within the existing social fabric proved invaluable to understanding the realities of schools and families around the Sacred Valley. To support our education initiatives in the most economically sustainable way given Sacred Valley’s potential for tourism, in 2000 we decided to build a hotel.

Wild Bush Luxury

Australia

Australia’s landscapes are some of the oldest on Earth and having been isolated for 45 million years, we are one of the most biologically unique and diverse countries on Earth, with more than 80% of flora and fauna species endemic to our environments.

Two hundred years of European settlement has emphasised the fragility of our unique country with land clearance, the introduction of feral animals and invasive weeds substantially impacting on the country’s biodiversity. Twenty two Australian mammal species have become extinct in the last 200 years (the highest rate of any country) and 20% of our remaining mammal species are also threatened with extinction. Climate change will only exacerbate this conservation challenge.

The Wild Bush Luxury portfolio offers guests a chance to see some of Australia’s most incredible and pristine environments, almost completely untouched by human settlement – the Top End and Flinders Ranges.
