Malliouhana is the grand dame of Anguilla, a beautiful hotel built in the 80’s but with a recent Miami style makeover, and perched on the cliffside above the most gorgeous beach. We know that the ‘two-speed’ family can find trouble in paradise; one half wants to chill, and the other can’t sit still – Malliouhana is the solution. Activities include tennis, paddle boarding and cycling. Meanwhile, there’s the amazing infinity pool, stunning Meads Bay beach, heavenly spa, lovely cooking and generally lazy luxury. Restaurant-hopping around the island in your own Mini Moke beach buggy could be where everyone agrees: being here is fantastic.

Belmond Cap Juluca offers a relaxed and lesser-known getaway. Sitting on its own peninsula with all accommodation on the beach it truly is barefoot luxury. For us, the impressive factor – apart from the pristine heat and general loveliness – rests in the focus on food. Uchu is a super-chic eatery specialising in the exotic and unusual tastes of Peru where you can sample pachamanquero and causa. There’s a Pimm’s restaurant with dreamy views of Maundays Bay. For Italian, there’s Cip’s by Cipriani. And there’s our absolute favourite, The Cap Shack, for smoky, flavoursome Caribbean lobster with hearty local cocktails.
